The Spiritual Care Counselor provides direct spiritual care services to individuals and groups of patients and families as they begin to heal from the disconnection of addiction. Reporting to the Spiritual Care Director, this position works with a variety of patients and populations in the residential setting to support people in exploring a spiritual practice that supports initial and ongoing recovery. Working within the organization’s mission and philosophy, as well as its Spiritual Care Principles, the Spiritual Care Counselor works to help achieve the goals and objectives of the Spiritual Care Service, as well as with the clinical teams and recovery management staff. The Spiritual Care Counselor works within a variety of faith traditions to meet the needs of the individuals and families served.
Job Responsibilities
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
- Works closely with Spiritual Care Director to plan, deliver, and evaluate spiritual care services and programming provided to assigned programs and populations;
- Provides individual, group, and family spiritual counseling services, utilizing a wide variety of tools from various faith-based traditions, schools of counseling, and the 12 Step philosophy, according to scope of education, experience, and licensure.
- Collaborates and communicates with clinical team(s) individually and collectively, via consultation and treatment plan review attendance;
- Documents patient response to services in electronic medical record, according to established policies and procedures;
- Facilitates the non-denominational spiritual services held weekly, as well as other special events as assigned by supervisor;
- Collaborates with staff development and supervisor to supervise interns as education, experience, and scope of practice allow.
- Collaborates with the Directors of Aftercare and Alumni Relations on aftercare and alumni related projects as assigned by supervisor.
- Presents on Cumberland Heights and its services, as well as specific area(s) of expertise to small and large groups, including professional and lay conferences as assigned;
- Serves as liaison with other faith tradition leaders and faith tradition communities within the communities served, as assigned.
- Ensures that a welcoming, safe and healing environment is maintained for each patient and family throughout the continuum of care.
- Recommends ways to improve the quality and delivery of services.
- Maintains confidentiality of company and patient information.
- Reacts productively to change.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Divinity, Theology, Pastoral Counseling or related field required; licensure, ordination in ministry, or CPE chaplaincy education preferred
- Minimum of one year experience in filed, two years preferred, that includes a pastoral counseling element required, such as chaplaincy, counseling, non-profit work, church ministry, etc.; addiction and recovery (12-step) knowledge and experience preferred.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to effectively speak, read and write in English.
- Proficient computer skills including Microsoft (Outlook, Work and Excel).
- Ability to set aside personal faith beliefs in order to work within a client’s belief system or framework; familiarity with a variety of faith based traditions (Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, native, etc.) preferred
- Proven ability to adapt to change and motivate individuals as well as the team.
- Excellent organizational skills for prioritizing multiple tasks and assignments.
- Excellent interpersonal, problem-solving, judgment and analytical skills.
- Ability to present, teach, and coach an individual, as well as small and large group settings.
- Ability to work collaboratively across programs and disciplines
- Excellent collaboration skills with colleagues to provide guidance, instruction, and training.
- Excellent psychosocial crisis management skills to be able to work calmly and professionally in stressful situations and ally with people in crisis.
- Knowledge of and ability to apply information regarding age/cultural/population specific characteristics to patient care.
- Must have knowledge or be able to attain knowledge of the Twelve Step philosophy with the ability to apply information regarding specific characteristics/behaviors to de-escalate a person in crisis in a calm supportive manner and to teach/model/counsel within this framework.
- If recovering, one year of abstinence required with five years preferred.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Position works primarily in a residential addiction treatment setting on a multi-building campus in such settings as offices, group rooms, chapel, and auditorium that involves everyday risks or discomforts requiring normal safety precautions.
- Service projects may include trips to various urban areas (for example, distributing supplies to the homeless).
- Hours may vary and include regular weekend work. Some travel may be required.
- Position requires frequent contact with people in crisis, including those who are emotionally volatile and may require additional safety precautions.
- Ability to lift and/or push pull up to 25lbs; move around campus on uneven and rural terrain.
- Ability to speak, hear, see, sit, walk, stand, reach, and use fine/gross motor skills for extended periods; move quickly enough to provide for the safety and instructional needs for patients.
